I
usually conceive the idea for a painting during the process of creating
the painting. Sometimes I begin by filling the canvas with color and
seeing what shapes appear from my brushstrokes. Other times I
start by drawing random lines. I try to let my senses find what the
canvas has to say. If I have a definite idea of what kind of world I
want to create, it generally changes during the making of it.
My hard- edged geometric work is a reflection of this absorption of
nature, even though not recognizably so.
I like to combine opaque and transparent glazes to give depth and
interest to my paintings. I enjoy working with the idea of creating an
illusion of something beyond the surface. The painting becomes
successful to me if I am able to obtain an emotional response and a
sense of mystery that provokes a closer look.
