July at the Refuge

Photography by Frank Ceravalo featuring images from the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge.

Frank  was selected to be the  Photographer in Residence at the Canaan National Wildlife Refuge in July 2009.

The reserve started the Photographer in Residence program last year and each photographer spends 1 month. The refuge is over 15,000 acres and has a variety of different bio-systems from forest to beaver ponds.

"My favorite was one panorama I took, Sunrise at Beaver Pond.  I was trying to get a sunrise type image at this pond and made several treks out the there to see what I could find. The fun on this was hiking into the lace in the dark, through dew heavy waste high St. Johns Wart. Then you set up in the dark.  My biggest worry was that the beaver family would swim through and mess up the reflection in the water.  They did not come out to play this day."

Frank  spent about 4 to 5 days a week here hiking around and shooting everything from vistas to insects. “Even though I am more of a landscape photographer, I have found myself doing more wildlife photography with all of the opportunities here. But I still get a few landscapes in while waiting for the action."

Join Frank during his opening reception at the Gallery on First Friday March 5th, from 7-10pm.
